Kimley-Horn is proud to announce that the I-95 Variable Speed Limits project won the 2024 WTS International Innovative Transportation Solutions Award. Every year, this recognition spotlights a women-led transportation project that incorporates creative strategies and solutions.
After the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) observed that heavy traffic was causing a high number of crashes and unreliable travel times on Virginia’s I-95 corridor, Kimley-Horn helped solve this problem by implementing a variable speed limits system. Our team created a customized congestion prediction algorithm, which uses real-time and historical data to adjust speed limits based on travel conditions. Customizable KITS™—a freeway and arterial transportation management system—was also incorporated and enabled VDOT to monitor system performance.
As a result, the I-95 Variable Speed Limits project aided in a 20% decrease in severe crashes, leading to fewer injuries along the northbound 15-mile stretch. This project demonstrated the expertise of our women leaders and their impact on the transportation industry and community mobility.
