ACEC Names Six Kimley-Horn Projects 2020 National Recognition Award Winners
We are proud to announce that the Kimley-Horn projects listed below have been honored with the 2020 National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).
The ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards competition celebrates exceptional engineering achievements from around the world. A distinguished panel of judges noted for their technical expertise and knowledge of the built environment assemble annually to critique and rank the project submissions for innovation, complexity, achievement, and value.

2020 ACEC National Recognition Awards
ATLANTA, GEORGIA
Super Bowl LIII Traffic Management and Transportation Planning Playbook
Kimley-Horn was selected by the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee to provide traffic management and transportation planning support for Super Bowl LIII at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
STUART, FLORIDA
City of Stuart PFAS Water Treatment System
The City of Stuart’s water treatment plant is a 6.0-MGD lime softening facility that needed an advanced treatment system to remove PFAS substances due to groundwater contamination from a nearby public safety complex. Kimley-Horn was called on to investigate the contamination and as a result, developed the first ion exchange (IX) water treatment system in Florida and the largest PFAS contamination removal system in the United States.
VIRGINIA
I-81 Corridor Improvement
Kimley-Horn assisted the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment, and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation in developing a study that resulted in a corridor improvement plan for Interstate 81.
MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA
North Fremont Street Bike and Pedestrian Access and Safety Improvements
The North Fremont Bike and Pedestrian Access and Safety Project was a major infrastructure project for the City of Monterey and formed part of the North Fremont Specific Plan, which will improve mobility and revitalize business activity along the corridor. This project is the first major transportation project to occur along North Fremont Street in over 50 years and has won several awards for its innovative approach to protected bike lanes.
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
Hermitage Flats Multifamily Residential Complex
Kimley-Horn served as lead engineer and landscape architect for the land planning, design, and construction administration phases of the Hermitage Flats development in Nashville, Tennessee. Hermitage Flats is an affordable 267-unit multifamily residential complex comprised of seven buildings spanning 10.7 acres. Kimley-Horn developed creative designs to manage challenging topography, provide low-impact stormwater treatment measures, and install substantial public pedestrian and transportation infrastructure.
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
I-5 / Genesee Avenue Interchange
Kimley-Horn prepared the PA/ED and the PS&E for the reconstruction of the I-5/Genesee Avenue interchange in San Diego, CA. The project consisted of replacing the existing five-lane Genesee Avenue bridge with a 10-lane overcrossing, widening and realigning of the on- and off-ramps at Genesee Avenue and Roselle Street, constructing a barrier-separated bike facility along I-5 from Voigt Drive to Roselle Street, and a combined bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing over Genesee Avenue.
